Winter landscape

I have been looking at Janinas tutorial, and prepared my paper the same way, by putting water on the backside of the paper, turned it upside down and put a glas board (from a frame) on top. For me it´s a new way of preparing the paper, and I had to try it. I usually use maskingtape to hold the paper. I kind of like the white line around the painting that comes from using the tape. But I´m open for new stuff so had to try Janinas way too offcourse!
This painting  is from a reference photo at PMP.
I wanted to create a cold and misty feeling. Did I do that?

Winter landscape. Arches 185 gr. CP

Palett: Paynes gray, Antwerp blue, Transparent yellow.
Plus a little White (crayon).

Here is a link to Janinas blog so you can look at all the photos of the tutorial,
in case you have missed it!

Now when the weather and the life feels a bit gloomy...

...I thought that I should make my own candel by using the "leftovers" from bought candles. There are allways leftovers and I don´t feel good about throwing away. I melted it down in a jar. I put the jar in a pan with boiling water and let it slowly melt. After that I poured it in an empty milk-box. I used ordinary yarn,  made of 100% cotton, tied it to something small and heavy- (a small screw maybe?) -and dipped it in the melted candel a couple of times. Last I let the yarn sink down in the middle of the melted candel until the heavy end reached the bottom. After this you only have to bend the yarn and let it stay on top of a stick. I put a wooden stick that I use for cooking and let it lay on top of the milk-box, and just hooked the yarn around it abit. After that it takes some time for the candle to get cold and hard again. Don´t forget to take away the paper-box before you use the candle!

Another way of being creative right?
Until you have made your own candel-light mine will do I hope.
It is the black candle to the left!    :)

A link to my last painting is HERE.
And to my last tutorial.
And a link to another tutorial is here in Janinas blog!
I think you will find these tutorial very helpful if you want to start painting watercolour.

One of my blogfriends asked me to explain. Hope this will be helpfull!

Use maskingtape to secure the paper otherwise it´s harder to
control the waterflow when the paper moves and changes shape
when getting wet. Do NOT remove tape before painting is
completely dry! And pull of the tape in direction moving  from the
painting and out! Otherwise you might destroy your painting.

Use a large watercolour brush and fill it with LOTS of colour (be sure you have prepared enough of the colour to last the whole paper, because there will not be enough time to mix new colour, PLUS you may get a different blend than before.) And when you paint you also have to tilt the paper to make the water want to stay at the bottom with each stroke of the brush. Do not go up further with the brush!! Stay in the "watery" bottom -line with each brushstroke! This is very important, otherwise you will get lines in the colour when it dries! The excess colour at the bottom you remove by dipping very carefully the TIP of a dried watercolour -brush (you can wipe it off on a cloth or a piece of paper). The brush suck the water right in. If you don´t
remove the excess water/colour it will bounce up in the glaze above during dryingtime and
make patterns that we don´t want. Keep tilting the paper until it is dry.
It will go on mixing nicely during drying time. So don´t worry.
But DON´T TOUCH!

If you would like to make the wash lighter and lighter, you
can drop a little water at the TOP of the brush at each brushstroke
to thin the colourmix you have in the brush. The water
will make the colour run downwards the end of the brush.
IF you instead dip the brush in water the same thing will happen,
but in the opposite direction. We don´t want that do we? We
want the pigments to stay at the tip of the brush, but only blend
it with a little water to make the wash lighter and lighter by
each brushstroke. I hope you understand my explanation!

Painting finished

It is hard to take good photos, but this is the closest to reality I could make it. I have added some white reflections on the water and also some on the boat. But it shows a bit more in reality.
I also added some Frensh Ultramarin to the left so that it would connect more with the right side.

I´m quite tired of painting this scene now, so I promisse you: I will not go on tormenting you with this scene!  ;)

4th. photo of my W.I.P.

The painting is still not ready!

4.) Here I have painted one layer of "Permanent Rose" to the left side of the water as well. I painted a little on top of the rope to soften the details down a bit. I also added the left side greens (they are Violett coloured in the distance.)

The red colour is "Scarlet Lake" and the yellow colour is "Raw Sienna". I have worked some more on the boat. (With "Paynes Gray" and "Antwerpblue".)  But that is a tough one, because I want it to remain soft in apperance. I might add some highlights to show some details on the boat that way.

Oh, I allmost forgot: I also added a very thin layer of blue at the bottom of the distant blue mountain, because I thought that I needed to separate the two mountains a bit more.

Don´t forget to scroll down to last post to see the other photos of this W.I.P. (Work In Progress).

Wishing you all

I am having so much FUN!

I have three processpaintings ready. But you have to wait for the final one! The photos aren´t the best, but I hope you can see what I´m up to anyway! I have some new ideas for this scene. (The colours show abit more in reality!)
As allways; the first painting at the bottom of the post!
Click on the photo to enlarge! You can see a bit better that way.

I added a glaze of Permanent Rose with my mop-brush
far down to the righ on the third photo. I did that with the heart
up in my throuth! But it looks real nice I think! I will
do the same to the left after I have put some masking fluid
on the details when they are ready. I believe that this
will "frame" the scene nicely.

Don´t forget to scroll down if you haven´t seen my last post with last process paintings!

Work in progress -A second painting.

This has been very interesting for me! With the last paintings different steps fresh in my head still, I went ahead with doing one more of the same. With one goal in mind: to be able to do it one more time, but with less fuss, so that I really can do it as a learning experience! I have taken some photos during the process. The first starts from the bottom of the post. And the last is at the top. I have used two different papers. The process painting is Daler Rowney. And the last finished painting is my favourite support; Arches fine.

One thing I tried to make in a different way was the use of masking fluid, but the problem with masking fluid is that it´s difficult to be as gentle with it as needed in the painting .I though I was very careful but apperantly not enough. It looks as big round spots of white paint instead of gentle highlights in the paper! So now I HAD to struggle to try to make my mistaces show less! And that was not the plan when I started this second painting.BUT I have learnt some more in the struggle! NO maskingmedium in the future if I want it to show very little. White crayon is much better! Plus the back of the thin brush.

Here is the first finished painting from the last post. -To compare with!
Support: Daler Rowney 300 gr. fine. Cold Pressed NOT

This is the finished Process Painting from today!
Support: Arches 185 gr. fine Cold Pressed

6.) I rubbed of the masking fluid and discovered that the white marks were far to much, I wanted it much much less. Ok; had to start rubbing around the painted colour with my flat hard acrylic brush to move it on top of the whites. Also adding some more colour on those areas. I liked the dark lines from the back of the small brush much much better than the white waterreflections bellow the boat on this painting.. I had to make them white lines dissapear some, therefore the dark reflections from under the boat are bigger on this last painting. Oh; I also painted the yellow (Raw Sienna) and red (Scarlet Lake) before putting to much dark reflections underneath, to keep the colours pretty clean.

 picture number two.

5.) I wet the paper on and around the tree area. Also where the water reflections were going to be. I put on some "Transparent yellow" and "French Ultramarine blue" on the tree area and also some on the water area bellow.

Picture number one

1 .) After the light drawing I put on some maskingfluid. I put on a very thin wash of Antwerpblue on
the whole paper (exept from the boat). I let it dry completely.

2.) The second wash was the same, but this time I didn´t paint on the sky, only the rest of the paper. I let it dry completely.

3.) Third wash; the same Antwerp blue, but NOT on the left mountain and sky.

4.) Fourth wash I painted a very thin layer of "Permanent Rose" everywhere except from on  the sky and the left mountain. This gave the painting a bit warmer feeling. Let dry completely.

Wishing you all a great weekend!
